"Independence is only the threshold to higher endeavours. At this solemn moment I call on you all to dedicate yourselves to the services of the new Malaya."
"...Now in the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful, I Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, Prime Minister of the Persekutuan Tanah Melayu, with the concurrence and approval of Their Highness the Rulers of the Malay States...hereby proclaim and declare that the Persekutuan Tanah Melayu is, and with Allah blessings shall be for ever, a sovereign, democratic and independent State..."
With his right arm raised, Tunku then shouted "MERDEKA!" and the crowd thundered "MERDEKA!" in response. Euphoria swept over the country. Persekutuan Tanah Melayu had gained its independence. Tunku Abdul Rahman had dreamed of a near miracle and on August 31, 1957, he achieved it. A new multiracial nation was born.
As unorthodox yet devout a nationalist as he is a Muslim, the TUNKU sort of heterodoxy has set a standard, "I have wanted all my life to do something for the people of Malaya, and in particular to better the lot of my own race, the Malays. If I am credited with nothing more I can at least thank Allah that I was able to lead our country along the path of independence, and beyond. In Malaya, with the complications of its multiple races, we have come to understand that the basis of our peace and happiness is tolerance and goodwill among our fellowmen, and I trust that this may be remembered by all those who are called to play their part in the service of Malaya and the Malayans."
May Allah bless Malaysia always.
